Didn´t play Sim Citie but its awesome to build up your own town. Just like you want. I spend about 4 hours just trying to optimise my traffic...... didn´t work tho.... xD

I've restarted 4 times due to traffic issues later in the game. Starting small and not expanding too quickly seems to help, as well as one-way roads keeping traffic flowing.

Don't forget the mod that re-enables achievements when you use mods!

I'm mainly running a few mods that add in more pre-made highway exits/junctions and one to help colour coding transit routes.

Here's my city, which currently is the only one out of 5 attempts that has worked ok with traffic.
 Nearly 10k and a decent amount of money by growing slowly and keeping utility costs under control.

My others are not so nice.

One tip for everyone in case you didn't know is you can save a fair amount of cash by throttling your water/sewage and Electricity.

If you're outputting 50Mw of power from your power stations, Wind Turbines etc, but your city only needs 25, then knock their budgets down. It will save you a good wad of cash. Same for the other Utilities in the Economy tab.

Also, keep on top of your RCI demands (Residential, Commercial, Industrial) but only expand a little a time. Don't Zone 100 blocks at a time, just do a small amount and see how the demand reacts.
